Where I’ve Been, What I’ve Been Doing

Long time, no post. Once again I’ve neglected this blog. Once again I will vow to do better. We will see if I stick to that promise. Considering Nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month) is soon upon us, I may be missing again until December. But it’s for a good cause, I promise!

I gained a housemate at the end of July. My Tosche Station co-host and co-blogger–oh yeah, also my fiance–finally moved to the Sunshine State. Between getting him settled, a two-week long family visit, a Disney cruise, and Dragon Con, we had a very busy August. Since then we’ve been getting the house settled and enjoying each other’s company. I’ve written a few short stories and completely redid the outline for my current WIP, so I haven’t been completely creatively bereft.

Dragon Con was a lot of fun, as usual. I was a panelist for the first time–three times, to be exact. The panels were all in the Star Wars track: Introduction to the Expanded Universe, Fan Activities, and Where are the Women and Minorities in Star Wars? I was really proud of the EU panel; I even wrote a syllabus for the occasion! The other panelists were really knowledgable and able to fill in on all the topics I don’t care about, like Boba Fett and Mandalorians, heh. And of course, anything involving women and minorities in science fiction is sure to draw my attention. I think we did a good job with that panel and hope to do another one next year. With Episode VII production in full swing, it should be interesting!

I also attended some writing workshops run by Michael Stackpole and Aaron Allston, and a few writing panels with Timothy Zahn. One of them was about writing hard science fiction, appropriate considering my current WIP! Basically all my fears about not being a scientist were put to rest, as I knew it would be. (I also had a bit of a squee-worthy moment when Tim congratulated me on selling my first short story.)

Speaking of selling a story–I sold my second to Every Day Fiction! I’m really excited to see this one posted online, as it was what inspired my current WIP. So to see those characters come to life, knowing I have much more in store for them, is pretty awesome. Not sure yet when it’ll be up, but it should be next month sometime.

Other than that sale and working on my WIP, I’ve got about eight short stories of varying lengths on submission. I hope to finish a good first draft of the WIP by the end of the year, complete with rewrites and all. And then I will revise, revise, and revise! And start another book. I have some ideas jotted down for a near-future dystopian, based on another short story, as well as a rewrite of Robber Barrons and a space pirate dystopian adventure.

That’s about it for now. See you on the other side of Nano!
